CalSTRS backs Nuveen's USD 2bn Sustainable Infrastructure Fund

Nuveen has formed a USD 2bn strategic partnership with the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS), the world’s largest educator-only pension fund. The collaboration channels capital through Nuveen’s Energy Infrastructure Credit (EIC) business, with CalSTRS serving as the anchor investor. The strategy addresses the escalating global demand for clean energy and critical infrastructure, amplified by the expansion of artificial intelligence, grid electrification, and the onshoring of manufacturing supply chains. Targeted investments span renewable power generation, energy storage, industrial decarbonization, energy efficiency, and the circular economy. This specialized private credit approach aims to finance both the construction and operation of essential projects through flexible structures, including credit facilities, structured debt, and preferred equity. For CalSTRS, the commitment represents an alignment of core fiduciary duties with long-term climate impact. The pension fund seeks to secure attractive, risk-adjusted returns for its over one million members while catalyzing measurable emissions reductions.

Global Infrastructure Partners acquires Summit Ridge

Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a part of BlackRock, has agreed to acquire a majority and controlling interest in Summit Ridge Energy (SRE), a premier commercial solar and energy storage company in the United States. Since its founding in 2017, Summit Ridge has developed a robust footprint across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and New England markets. The company currently operates over 275 facilities, providing locally generated, cost-effective power to more than 60,000 businesses, households, and municipalities. The acquisition arrives at a critical juncture for U.S. energy markets, driven by unprecedented electricity demand, grid security concerns, and the push for scalable decarbonization. SRE’s proven execution—spanning project construction to long-term asset management—has positioned it as an industry leader with over 3 GW of solar and storage projects currently operating or in development nationwide. GIP’s mid-market investment strategy targets essential infrastructure supported by structural growth drivers like the global transition to a low-carbon economy.

Quinbrook closes GBP 587mn Renewables Impact fund after oversubscribed raise

Specialist investment manager Quinbrook has announced the final, oversubscribed close of its second UK-focused fund, the Quinbrook Renewables Impact Fund II (QRIF II). The fund secured GBP 587mn in institutional commitments, surpassing its £500 million target, fueled by a high re-up rate from investors in its inaugural 2023 fund. Marketed exclusively to UK and Irish institutional investors, QRIF II targets infrastructure required to meet the UK’s Clean Power 2030 and Ireland’s 80% renewable electricity targets. The strategy emphasizes investments underpinned by long-term, inflation-linked contracts and essential-service characteristics to deliver stable returns alongside economic decarbonization. The fund’s capital is already being deployed across several advanced projects, including Mallard Pass Solar Project, Wexford Synchronous Condenser, Aegis Energy and Project Norton. To date, Quinbrook has committed GBP 1.2bn in equity capital to UK and Irish projects. The QRIF II investments are projected to support 2,300 jobs and avoid over 25 million tonnes of CO2 emissions throughout their operational lifespan.

Green Project Technologies acquires Optera

Green Project Technologies, an ACT Group company, has acquired Optera to form a comprehensive, AI-driven climate management platform. The acquisition merges Green Project’s supply chain engagement and renewable energy procurement tools with Optera’s enterprise-grade carbon accounting software. The strategic timing of this deal aligns with tightening mandatory disclosure regulations across Europe and North America, including CSRD, CBAM, and California’s SB 253. Both firms recognize that Scope 3 emissions remain the most complex reporting burden and financial risk factor for corporate procurement. By integrating Optera’s audit-ready data capabilities with Green Project’s network of over 6,000 active suppliers, the combined entity aims to transition clients from passive emissions measurement to active reduction. A key feature of the unified platform is its direct connection to a decarbonization marketplace. This grants enterprises immediate access to renewable energy certificates, biomethane, and sustainable aviation fuel with full pricing transparency and no volume minimums.

Deloitte launches sustainability framework to quantify investment value

Deloitte has introduced “Sustainability Fusion,” a framework and AI-enabled digital evaluator designed to help corporate leaders bridge the gap between sustainability initiatives and financial outcomes. Developed in collaboration with the Aspen Institute’s Business & Society Program and a 25-member working group of corporate and NGO leaders, the tool enables Chief Sustainability Officers and Chief Financial Officers to assess sustainability projects using standard corporate financial metrics. While traditional sustainability assessments focus primarily on regulatory compliance and reporting, Sustainability Fusion shifts the focus to enterprise value creation. By translating sustainability assumptions into cash-flow impacts—specifically utilizing tax-adjusted cash flow (TACF) as a core metric—the framework allows organizations to evaluate these investments using standard financial principles like cost, revenue, and risk. The web-based tool establishes a repeatable, enterprise-wide method for comparing and prioritizing sustainability investments against other business initiatives.
